In terms of the build, Polk Audio PSW10 feels quite solid at hand, thanks to its high quality medium density fiberboard. Sporting a 10-inch driver, the sub easily matches the performance of more expensive and “powerful” products. On the negative side of things, we found that that PSW10 isn’t all that capable of handling extended length sounds (i.e. helicopter landing) and very deep bass. That said, we believe you could find a better alternative in the market if movie is your thing. However, if you plan to use it to get your tunes more banging, this should do the trick.
Pioneer SW-8MK2 Andrew Jones Designed 100-Watt Powered Subwoofer
Running on a power of 100-watt, Pioneer SW-8MK2 easily shows off its superiority over our first sub but, like always, with more power comes a heftier price tag. At more than $180, some of you who just began thinking of buying a sub will probably need more time before visiting Circuit City. In terms of performance, we did have a hard time spotting any weak points of this sub. Whether you use it to bring your favorite action movies to life or pump in more fun on your gaming hours, this sub won’t fall short.
Things get a little bit trickier, however, if you use it to stream your favorite tunes. This is especially the case if you listen to fast paced metal songs which incorporate extended double bass playing and quick staccato notes. Still, unless you have the ears of a very demanding audiophile, you won’t likely find the shortcomings. Like we told you before, we had a tough time figuring out in what area this Pioneer SW-8MK2 is inferior. If you have extra money on your account, though, we’d suggest that you use it to buy the necessary extras. That way, you will find this sub completely flawless.
BIC America F12 12-Inch 475-Watt Front Firing Powered Subwoofer
Of all subwoofers we include in this article, BIC America F12 is the biggest one. Featuring a 12-inch HRN driver, this sub is so huge and heavy that you’ll need some time finding the best place to put it down. Good news is overall build feels extremely solid, though, we still highly recommend that you keep it away from your child’s reach. As far as the performance and sound quality are concerned, we couldn’t be more pleased to find that the F12 goes well with all media playing scenarios we threw at it. From the softest whispers to a heart-stopping impact sound, this sub didn’t show the slightest sign of difficulty.
Some users have reported that their F12 produced nothing but very muddy sounds on high level of volume. If you notice the same problems, try to check your receiver. Great difference on frequency response can cause the reproduced sound to turn out very ugly. Also, don’t use cheap cable. It probably never crossed in your mind but cheap cable does affect the sound reproduction of the sub. One last thing to keep in mind before buying BIC America F12 is, although the product description says it can handle frequency from 25-250 Hz., you’d better not set it above 90 Hz. Let your front speaker do the hard work.

Depending on your budget, you can buy a sub with specifications hitting the roof but keep in mind that high price tag doesn’t always meant better sound quality and more impressive performance. Some entry level subs like Polk Audio PSW10 do offer the same great experience on particular frequency but then it might not last the same as long as higher end products. If it is your first time to buying a powered subwoofer for home setup, it is best to go with the cheaper ones. That way, once you’re ready with an upgrade, you can easily appreciate the difference.
